1910-2010
St. Mary’s Episcopal Church is celebrating their centennial year in 2010! We have a grand celebration planned for the weekend of June 26, 2010 along with several other events throughout the year. We hope that everyone in the community will celebrate this milestone with us and participate in these wonderful events to mark our 100 years.
St. Mary’s has been and continues to be an integral part of our community, especially in recent years. Our Thursdays on the Lawn concerts in July and August are a staple of our summer scene, now entering our 10th year. Our annual Seafood Festival in August is a culinary delight for visiting seafood lovers. We nourish our summer visitors spiritually with Worship on the Beach on the Saturdays of July and August at the 101st St. pavilion. While we enjoy these wonderful summer events with our summer guests, our outreach into the Cape May County community has been significant. Heavenly Scavengers rescues useable furniture from homes being torn down and distributes it to the poor. Our This ‘N That Thrift Shop in Rio Grande serves the needy as well as the bargain hunter. The Mustard Seed, our outreach arm of St. Mary’s, continues to explore ways to support efforts for transitional housing and affordable housing in the County. Our partnership with St. Barnabas Church, Villas, has led to the founding of an outreach center in Rio Grande known as The Branches, a place of welcome where people are fed spiritually and where physical hungers are also satisfied. We do all this work in the name of the Lord Jesus so that God’s love can better be known through our efforts and others may come to know the hope we have found in our God for the living of our lives.

We've come a long way! We invite you to celebrate with us as we mark our 100 years!

Brief History

Founded in 1910 to serve a group of summer vacationers to Stone Harbor, St. Mary's Episcopal Church is a work in progress. The cedar-shingled frame structure built in 1910, and dedicated on July 2, 1911, was known locally as St. Mary's-by-the-Sea, a summer mission staffed by visiting clergy. In 1955, the church received its first vicar, and the parish was incorporated in 1967.

Since then, St. Mary's has grown in many ways. The Church retains the original design, but over the years expansion and improvements to both the church and the adjacent rectory and parish hall have been substantial.

Growth of its physical plant parallels growth in God's love and an expanded understanding of Christ's life as our example for achieving our mission. From a handful of dedicated followers, the membership of St. Mary's now numbering over 180 households, continues to grow. While the majority of parishioners live on the Seven Mile island and in nearby off-shore communities, a significant number are summer residents who return each year.

St. Mary's sits snugly as it has since 1910 on the Seven Mile Beach, a barrier island, in downtown Stone Harbor, a seaside summer resort at the Jersey shore. This fact makes us a little bit different from mainland churches. Summer in our town is very different from the quiet of winter. The population triples, the shops and restaurants are full, and the downtown area is very lively. The glow of St. Mary's jewel-like windows in the evening adds to this festive ambiance.

Our charming church under the trees is very much a part of the summer scene as we step outside with Thursdays on the Lawn, Worship at the Beach, a day-long Seafood Festival, and the traditional ECW Sidewalk Sale held in conjunction with the Stone Harbor Merchant's Day Sale at summer's end.

Our location also gave us the inspiration for an innovative outreach, namely Heavenly Scavengers. Our outreach to the community has recently expanded with a thrift shop and furniture annex located in the Rio Grande section of the County. Our desire is not only to meet the need for household furnishings and personal items, but to address the necessity of affordable housing.

Our desire to grow the ministry of the Church in Cape May County has led to our partnership with St. Barnabas Mission, Villas, NJ. and we now have a common space, "The Branches" in Rio Grande for worship, education, outreach, and meetings.

St. Mary's has come a long way since 1910, and we look forward with much excitement as we continue on this wonderful adventure. There is great work to be done and by God's grace we will continue to move forward in hope, growing the ministry of our church for the greater honor and glory of God.

We invite you to join us as we strive to accomplish God's work and to discover His presence among us.

St. Mary's turns inside out in the summer!

The doors of St. Mary's open out to the community all year round, but we literally open the doors and move outside in the summer to our front lawn and the beach to better enjoy summer at the shore.

Join us for a concert at dusk under the trees, try worshipping at the beach on a Saturday evening, enjoy our outdoor Seafood Festival, and shop for bargains and treasures at our traditional sidewalk sale.

Come join us for worship when you visit Stone Harbor, and please stay for coffee. We love visitors and welcome you to tour our historic church.

Stop in our chapel any time day or night for a quiet respite.
We warmly welcome you to  St. Mary's!

Rally Day 2009

Rally Day '09 was a great kick off for our Centennial celebration in 2010 and a good start on another year of ministry and spiritual growth.  You can read about Rally Day here.

The Celebration

Plans are underway for a grand celebration of our 100 years. Our Centennial Committee has been hard at work. Events for our centennial year include a grand banquet in June and special worship celebration to mark the event with our Bishop, choir concerts, a fundraising walk for charity in memory of past St. Mary's parishioners, a float in the Thanksgiving parade, a church retreat and creating memorabilia for the centennial. Presently, committee members are developing a history of St. Mary's to be published in advance of the centennial. Joe Spence has placed all of our historical documents in an orderly set of binders according to different time segments for easy review.
So, get ready for a year of wonderful activities to celebrate our heritage and give thanks to God for our 100 years of history. If you would like to be a part of the Centennial Committee, contact the parish office or come to a meeting.

The Committee

The Centennial Committee - Bill Haines, Bill Griffiths, Janet Kowalski, Val Armstrong, Nancy Runzer, Joe Spence, Josee Rich, & Fr. John Sosnowski - is now meeting periodically to plan events. Any interested parishioners who would like to be a part of this planning are welcome to join us.
We are looking for your photos and stories about St. Mary's. Contact
Janet if you have something to share. All photographs will be returned to you.
